Make Exercise a Fun Family Affair

Exercise is one of the most important activities a family can do together. Parents who take the time to exercise on a regular basis with their family help their children to develop a positive self-image, achieve the confidence to participate in organized sports and gain the ability to handle everyday stresses. Most important, children who develop the healthy habit of exercising while they are young are more likely to stay physically active throughout their lifetime.

Something To Look Forward To

When physical activity is a family affair, your child is less likely to perceive it as a chore, but instead it is something they look forward to each day. There are endless physical activities you can do together as a family. Sit down and talk about what activities each family member enjoys, then come up with a schedule of activities that fit in your schedule. Some ideas include swimming, hiking, biking to a neighborhood park, horseback riding, bowling, dancing, tennis, racquet ball and in-line skating.

Play Games Together

Playing outdoor games together is another way to keep your family physically active. Instead of sitting down to watch television after dinner, go to the backyard and play catch or a game of freeze tag. Not only will playing together nurture a family connection, it will also help to build strong bones and muscles and increase cardiovascular endurance.

Some great backyard activities include:

  • Building an outdoor obstacle course that includes running, climbing, rolling, jumping and swinging. See which team can complete the course the fastest, then try to beat that time the next night.
  • Playing a family game of kickball, badminton or basketball.
  • Having a jump rope or hula hoop contest.
  • Running relay races.
  • Creating a treasure hunt where team members have to crawl, climb and run to find treasures.
  • Tossing a Frisbee or playing hopscotch.
Coach an Organized Sport

Encourage your child to participate in an organized sport by taking an active role yourself. There are many opportunities for parents to coach sports such as baseball or softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball or football. Even taking an active role in the stands and cheering your child on will foster his or her love of physical activity.

Teach your child new skills that will build confidence on the field or court. Take the time to play catch or hit some baseballs on the field, shoot some hoops in the driveway or hit golf balls at the local driving range. Remember to be patient and offer plenty of encouragement. The time you spend with your child will make playing a sport more fun and exciting!

Healthy and Happy

Kids who exercise on a regular basis tend to be healthier and happier than those who do not. Physical activity helps your child stay in good shape, as a result boosting self-confidence and keeping them well-adjusted at home, school and in social circles.

Another major benefit of exercise is that it can reduce stress levels. Children who are physically active are more able to handle conflict with friends, the strain of homework and tests, job pressure, and major life changes such as moving to a new home or going off to college. And best of all, physical activity helps to prevent high blood pressure, strengthen bones, and prevent heart disease.
