- Choose a time-out area where the child can sit down
without seeing TV or playing with toys.
- Begin the time-out once your child is calm and sitting
quietly. It should last one minute for each year of
the child's life. If your child starts crying or walks
away before the time-out is over, start the time-out
again.
- When a time-out is over, ask your child if he is
ready to get up. If he nods or says, "yes,"
explain what he did wrong and what you want him to
do the next time.
Like anything new that you try with a child, it will
take some time before you begin to see results. However,
using time out consistently and fairly will make a positive
difference in your child's life and the way you parent.
