Giving Medicine to Infants

Boys Town Pediatrics

Administering medication to a baby or an infant can be frustrating and sometimes difficult and sometimes requires a little bit of trial and error.  Some people will try putting it in a bottle with their formula or breast milk.  This can work though I generally recommend mixing it in with a small volume that you know your baby will finish, because the most difficult part is if you put it in a big bottle and the baby doesn't finish it then the fear is that they didn't get their correct dose of medication.

If this doesn't work because some babies won't tolerate it in their bottles, then my best advice is just to lay the baby down and to direct the medicine as far back to the side of the mouth as you can and do it as quickly as possible.

Giving medicine to your infant is essential to keeping your baby healthy and happy. It also can be a very difficult thing to do. Learn some tips for giving your infant medicine.
