Chronic Tension Headaches in Children

​An individual may be diagnosed with chronic tension headaches when they experience tension headaches for at least 15 days a month for three months. This type of headache must last at least 30 minutes but can last for multiple days. A lot of times an individual gets this type of headache in the middle of the day.

Symptoms of Chronic Tension Headaches

Unlike a migraine, chronic tension headaches typically are not bad enough to keep an individual from going about their normal day. Instead, it is a dull pain or pressure felt on both sides of the head. It can make the neck, jaw and shoulder muscles feel sore.

Treatment for Chronic Tension Headaches

Over-the-counter pain relievers may be used for chronic tension headache relief. However, it is important to note that medications such as pain relievers should not be used for more than a couple days at a time. Regular exercise is thought to help those with frequent headaches. It can also help to avoid stress or stressful situations.

When to See a Doctor

An individual should see a docto​r if their chronic tension headaches get in the way of their normal life or if they are needing to take medication more than two times a week.
Additionally, if an individual experiences headaches often and the pattern suddenly changes, they should see a doctor.
