Vestibular Tests: Right Appiani Maneuver

  • One treatment for horizontal canal BPPV is to do the Gufoni or the Appiani maneuver.  For this maneuver you’re going to have the patient lay away from the affected side.  So in this example, the patient has right sided horizontal canal BPPV, and so she is going to lay down on her left side, keeping her head straight.  We’ll hold this position for one to two minutes or until the nystagmus fatigues.  After one to two minutes or until the nystagmus fatigues, we’ll have her turn her head, nose facing the floor, again for one to two minutes or until the nystagmus goes away.  After which she will return to the seated position.
